Planning Your Twin Cities Wedding: What if it Rains on My Wedding Day?

Rain, Rain, Don’t Go Away (Just Yet!)
Your Maidenwood Wedding & A Little Liquid Sunshine

You are considering choosing the breathtaking beauty of Maidenwood as the backdrop for your love story. Visions of saying “I do” amidst the wildflowers of The Prairie with Lake Pepin shimmering in the distance, or under the majestic canopy of The Pines, have danced in your head. But what happens if the forecast calls for a little liquid sunshine on your big day?

At Maidenwood, nestled within our private 40-acre nature-inspired wedding venue overlooking the Mississippi River, we believe that a little rain doesn’t have to dampen your spirits – or your celebration! In fact, we’ve often seen those fleeting showers pass right by, leaving behind a refreshed landscape and even more vibrant colors for your photos. The Maidenwood Advantage: Flexibility and Expertise

One of the many benefits of choosing Maidenwood is our inherent flexibility and the expertise of our in-house coordinator and venue manager. We understand that weather can be unpredictable, especially in our beautiful bluff country. That’s why we work closely with you as you are planning your Twin Cities wedding to create a “Plan B” that still feels just as magical as your original vision.

Waiting Out the Weather: A Maidenwood Specialty

More often than not, the rain showers we experience tend to be brief. Our team is skilled at monitoring the weather patterns and communicating with you to make informed decisions in real-time. This might mean slightly adjusting your timeline to allow a passing shower to move through.

Imagine this: a gentle rain begins just before your outdoor ceremony. Instead of panicking, our team seamlessly transitions into a brief, impromptu cocktail hour in The White Barn. Your guests can mingle, enjoy a drink, and the anticipation for your vows builds. As the clouds part and the sun peeks through, you proceed with your outdoor ceremony in The Pines, The Forest, or The Prairie, with the air feeling fresh and the light even more stunning. This happened in June for Abby & Chris’ wedding but we had talked through the options and this was the bride’s favorite. We ended up having a quick 45 minute social hour first, then once the rain let up, we all headed out to our woodsy wedding spot, The Pines as you can see pictured in the main photo. Maidenwood staff went up and took the tarps off the benches so they were still dry and some guests brought along umbrellas incase we had another sprinkle. It ended up raining a couple more times throughout the afternoon and evening, but they were still able to get out to our golden hour photo spot during one of the dry times and catch a rainbow (pictured right).  You can also watch the video of Abby & Chris’ unforgettable day here

Our Stunning Indoor Sanctuary: The Glass-Walled Pavilion

However, if you prefer not to chance the weather or if the forecast calls for more persistent rain, Maidenwood offers a truly exceptional backup plan: our incredible enclosed glass-walled pavilion attached to The White Barn. Built to showcase our beautiful property, we installed 10′ tall glass walls into our pavilion that can be open on the beautiful days and close on the not-so-nice weather days.

This stunning space allows you to say “I do” surrounded by the beauty of nature, protected from the elements. The glass walls offer panoramic views of our picturesque landscape, ensuring you still feel connected to the outdoors while staying dry and comfortable. It’s a bright, airy, and equally beautiful setting for your ceremony. We have fit ceremonies up to 130 in our enclosed glass pavilion. If you’re needing more space than that, we can host you inside the main White Barn wedding venue space. You will get married under our beautiful chandelier and we can do a mini room flip while your guest enjoy their time at social hour.

  • Focus on What Matters: At the end of the day, you’re marrying the love of your life. The weather is just a detail in the grand scheme of your commitment.
  • Live in the Moment: Don’t let worrying about the rain steal your joy. Embrace each moment as it comes and trust that everything will work out beautifully.
  • Pack Accordingly: Consider having stylish umbrellas and perhaps even some fun, colorful rain boots on hand for photos. At Maidenwood, we will even provide you with a few clear umbrellas to use day-of.
  • Remember the Beauty After the Rain: Often, a rain shower is followed by the most incredible light and even a rainbow! Maidenwood’s gardens and bluff views truly come alive after a bit of rain.
